A perennial herb which grows extensively throughout the world, but originally native to Europe. It has had many uses, including the production of the finest linen in Ireland, as a commercial source of chlorophyll, as a spring tonic and by the Romans to beat their arthritic and rheumatic joints which developed when they invaded the colder northern climes. Grows everywhere, particularly grassy, waste places, near walls and buildings, ditches, stream sides, phosphorous and nitrogen rich soils. The leaf, seeds and root are all used medicinally. Traditionally used to help in the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic enlargement (Chevallier).
